Introduction to
Pukekohe Hill School

Our Vision Statement:

"At Pukekohe Hill School we are a community of lifelong learners committed
to achieving our best and making a difference".

In partnership with families, staff and students this vision statement forms a key goal of the school as it develops and delivers teaching
and learning programmes that are based on the New Zealand National Curriculum.

Pukekohe Hill School and Community

Pukekohe is located 51 kilometres south from Auckland and is the main shopping centre for the Franklin District. The area is well known for its extensive market gardens, and its fast developing shopping and service facilities. Pukekohe is seen as a very family friendly community. The school is surrounded by well established homes and quality subdivisions on the southern side of Pukekohe, at the base of Pukekohe Hill.
Hill School itself is set on substantial and attractive grounds, which include a large number of mature trees, including a native tree area, asphalt courts, an outdoor stage, two large playing fields, a swimming pool, two adventure playgrounds and a more recently built fitness adventure trail.

As well as 26 classrooms, other buildings include an Administration Block, a Dental Clinic which is staffed for a limited time each year, a modern library,
a staffroom and a number of well equipped resource areas. More recent facilities and upgrades include a specialist room for our perceptual motor programme,
a library resource room, and both a junior and senior classroom block interior refurbishment. Three additional classrooms were completed by the end of 2009,
and a very welcome extension to the main Resource Centre was also built. Over 2010 - 2011, the school has also had a complete exterior painting upgrade,
and planning is underway for a new library learning centre, staff room and additional classroom remodelling.
There is a Satellite Class on site which has nearby Parkside School as its base.
A school hall complex is also a real asset for the school community.

The roll has grown due to demographic changes and the popularity of the school. The opening roll for 2011 was 540 and is expected to close at over 600.
The school has an enrolment policy in place to monitor and control roll growth.

Current staffing equates to 30 full time teachers. The total staff is currently 55, which includes Principal, Teachers, Administration, Teacher Aides,
Library Assistants, Resource Manager, Cleaning Staff, and Grounds personnel.

An active PTA and supportive Board of Trustees are important features of Hill School. These two groups provide an important link to promote a partnership between the community and the school.
The school has a mixture of ethnic groups. Approximately 60% identify as NZ European, 18% Maori, 12% Indian, and 10% of Pacifica, Asian, European and Middle Eastern heritage. Our school families reflect the Pukekohe community with professional, skilled and semi-skilled families.

An increasing number of parents commute to Manukau and Auckland for employment.
An after school and before school care programme is available as a response to community needs and is provided by a private business called KAS (Kids After School) KAS also runs holiday programmes.

Features of Hill School

The school is focussed on providing a strong educational programme based on the New Zealand curriculum. Staff are committed to offering children a challenging range of learning opportunities that promote academic, physical, social, emotional and cultural development.

A virtues programme is an important part of the culture and ethos of our school, and recent initiatives include a student Enviro Group and our being part of the Health Promoting Schools programme.

A successful innovation at Hill, is that all 5 year old children beginning school are initially placed in a Reception Class as part of preparing them for entry into a New Entrant class.

The school has developed a Concept Based Inquiry Approach as part of integrated curriculum planning and to provide an exciting teaching
and learning environment for children. We believe this is an excellent "fit" with the NZ Curriculum.

Hill School has a compulsory uniform for all students. A uniform list is included with the school's enrolment package.

The school provides a range of programmes for children with special learning needs including those with English as a second language.

We also recognise the gifts and abilities of students through the provision of enrichment programmes. The school has a gifted and talented co-ordinator and is also linked to the Franklin Gifted and Talented Network.

The school has a reasonably "open door" approach which complements communication and consultation with our school community.

The partnership we have with families is part of the strength of the school as it continues its fine tradition as one of Pukekohe's leading educational facilities.
